About St. Mary's Medical Center

logo smmcOpened by the Pallottine Missionary Sisters in 1924, St. Mary's Medical Center (SMMC) is among the largest healthcare facilities in West Virginia with 393 beds. SMMC is home to St. Mary's Regional Heart Institute, St. Mary's Regional Cancer Center, St. Mary's Regional Neuroscience Center, and St. Mary's Regional Joint Replacement Center. St. Mary's also operates St. Mary's ER Ironton and the St. Mary's Center for Education.

St. Mary's Regional Heart Institute is an accredited chest pain center by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. The Institute has also been recognized by the Joint Commission and American Heart Association with certifications in a number of areas, including heart failure. The Joslin Diabetes Center education affiliate at St. Mary's helps patients manage diabetes through education in partnership with the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard University.

St. Mary's Regional Cancer Center is home to the only CyberKnife® Radiosurgery System in the Tri-State and the state of West Virginia. St. Mary's Breast Center is a certified Hidden Scar™ Center in both Hidden Scar breast surgery and breast reconstruction.

St. Mary's Regional Neuroscience Center is home to St. Mary's Regional Stroke Center, which was the first in the region to achieve certification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and the first hospital in West Virginia to receive the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™ for Stroke Care. St. Mary's Regional Spine Center was the first in the nation to be recognized by the Joint Commission for disease-specific care certification in spine surgery.

St. Mary's Regional Joint Replacement Center is recognized nationally for healthcare quality by the Joint Commission and has been awarded the Gold Seal of Approval with disease-specific care certification for hip and knee joint replacement.

St. Mary's Center for Education houses St. Mary's Schools of Nursing, Respiratory Care, and Medical Imaging. St. Mary's School of Nursing, established in 1926, is the oldest nursing school in the state operated by a medical facility.
